BEN FOLDS FIVE

Ben Folds Five on Opaque Turqoise vinyl

This 1995 debut album is full of Tin Pan Alley showmanship, with a touch of Something/Anything? era Todd Rundgren meets Look Sharp! era Joe Jackson and an alternative rock sensibility. Witty, offbeat, piano-based songs helped Ben Folds Five receive almost universally positive reviews, and spawned five singles. The record failed to chart, but caused an intense bidding war among the majors eventually won by Sony Music. On Opaque Turquoise vinyl.

Butthole Surfers Out In September On Color Vinyl!

Independent Worm Saloon On Translucent Blue Vinyl

“Independent Worm Saloon” is the major label debut by the Butthole Surfers originally released by Capitol Records in 1993. Riding the wave of the early 90s alternative explosion the band used some of that major label money and hired former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones as producer and the result is a tight in your face album that didn't tone down the band at all. Gibby Haynes is in fine form with his often hilarious and bizarre vocals and lyrics working their way into your brain on all out rockers like “Who Was In My Room Last Night?” and “Goofy’s Concern” and on the more mellow numbers such as “The Ballad Of Naked Man” and “You Don’t Know Me”. On translucent blue vinyl, limited edition of a 1,000. In a polylined inner sleeve. Record stampers produced by Record Technology, Inc. Camarillo California, USA. Junior Murvin Roots Reggae classic coming in January 2018 on color vinyl!

Police & Thieves blue vinyl

Police & Thieves is a Roots Reggae classic by Junior Murvin originally released in 1977 which was recorded by Lee "Scratch" Perry (who also wrote or co-wrote many of the songs) at his legendary Black Ark Studios with The Upsetters. The title song was memorably covered by The Clash in a very different arrangement than Murvin's. Perry's imaginative and groundbreaking production surrounded Junior's falsetto vocals and the musicians in a dense, echo heavy, spaced out sound to create one of the great songs, and albums, of the roots era. Now available on opaque blue vinyl! Click here or on the cover image for more info or to purchase a copy.

Bobby Womack

The Womack "Live" 180 gram vinyl

In 1970 Womack and manager Ed Wright decided to capitalize on his new-found solo visibility by capturing an in-person performance at a Los Angeles nightclub. The Womack "Live" was the result, a compelling, cathartic session where, as the original liner notes attest, Womack "held church," agonizing, pleading, exhorting and testifying to a crowd fully in rapture to him. As well as extended jams on album material like 'How I Miss You Baby,' the playlist featured killer versions of 'Something' and 'Everybody's Talkin'' and some outrageous stage patter. All in all, it's an incredible recital capturing Bobby Womack in his prime, and even comes with an uncredited appearance from Percy Mayfield. Click here or on the cover image for more info or to purchase a copy.

Robert Pete Williams

"Louisiana Blues" limited edition bottleneck brown vinyl

Over 50 years since his discovery by ethnomusicologists Dr. Harry Oster and Richard Allen in the prison farm of Angola, Louisiana, what is it that makes the blues as sung and picked by Robert Pete Williams such a singular listening experience, unequaled elsewhere in that musical form? As Peter Guralnick, in his Feel Like Going Home book writes: “It’s difficult to approve the banalities of most blues singers after listening to Robert Pete Williams. More than anyone else he shatters the conventions of the form and refuses to rely upon any of the clichés, either of music or of lyric, which bluesman after bluesman will invoke. Instead he sings blues which reflect a unique and personal vision; he makes each song unmistakably his own.” Unfamiliar keys, cliché-free lyricism, spontaneity, an individualistic style in invoking his particular blues, all make Robert Pete Williams an idiosyncratic entry into the canon. It’s impossible to listen to blues artists before him and hear strains of his particular style. None have matched it since. Louisiana Blues contains 10 songs recorded in the month of July 1966 out in Berkeley, California for John Fahey’s Takoma imprint. Comes with a 8 page booklet. Limited edition of 600 on bottleneck brown vinyl. Click here or on the cover image for more info or to purchase a copy.

Bobby Womack

"Fly Me To The Moon" on 180 gram vinyl

1968's Fly Me To The Moon was Womack's first solo long-player, after a decade of forging a singular path as R&B morphed into soul music, first with the Sam Cooke-sponsored Valentinos, and subsequently as a songwriter and guitarist for the likes of Wilson Pickett. Indeed, the album features Womack's version of Pickett's 'Midnight Mover,' along with very groovy interpretations of 'California Dreamin'' (a small hit at the time),' 'Moonlight In Vermont,' and the title cut. But it is the singers own superlative material - 'What Is This,' 'Somebody Special,' 'Take Me' - that shines best on this fantastic debut, produced by the estimable Chips Moman at his American Studios facility in Memphis, utilizing one of the finest session crews in southern soul. Click here or on the cover image for more info or to purchase a copy.

Bobby Womack

"My Prescription" on 180 gram vinyl

Womack returned to American in 1969 to cut My Prescription, also produced by Moman, at a time that the venue was becoming exceptionally hot with visits from the likes of Elvis, Dusty Springfield, Neil Diamond and others. Womack's sophomore album may however well be one of the most demonstrative showcases of studio and session crew, incandescent on a finely-honed program of classy and soulful performances, with the singer in full control. Tracks like 'How I Miss You Baby,' 'Arkansas State Prison' and 'I Can't Take It Like A Man' stand as some of Womack's greatest moments, and taken as a whole, My Prescription stands not only the man's first truly great solo album, but also a timeless slice of sophisticated southern soul-making. The Church color reissue

"Sometime Anywhere" on blue & orange vinyl

(2-LP set) The 1994 release by The Church "Sometime Anywhere" found the group down to two original members, bassist/singer Steve Kilbey and guitarist Marty Willson-Piper, after the departure of Peter Koppes. The resulting album featured new song writing approaches and musical experimentation resulting in many lengthy, lush tracks (Day Of The Dead, Two Places At Once, Fly Home). Song structures are much freer with an early electronica sound dotting the textured arrangements with loops and drum machines featured on some of the songs. "Sometime Anywhere" is another dark, epic, and exotic masterpiece by the Aussie legends that propelled the band into the next phase of their career. Reissued on blue & orange vinyl from Plain Recordings. Click here or on the cover image for more info or to purchase a copy.

Flamin' Groovies

"Shake Some Action" on red vinyl

Shake Some Action was the fifth album, originally released in 1976, by the legendary San Francisco band Flamin’ Groovies. Recorded in Great Britain and produced by Dave Edmunds, Shake Some Action marked a departure for the group from the blues based / garage rock sound of the earlier records to a more power pop / British invasion direction. This was due to the departure of lead singer Roy Loney, the ascendance of guitarist Cyril Jordan, and the fact that the band moved to England in 1972 and was building a large following there. A certified power pop classic brought to you by 4 Men With Beards on red vinyl. Click here or on the cover image for more info or to purchase a copy.

The Jesus And Mary Chain color vinyl reissue

"Automatic" on green vinyl

1989's Automatic is the third album from Glasgow alternative rock institution and was engineered by Alan Moulder. At this point in their career, J&MC was essentially a duo – brothers Jim and William Reid and a drum machine. The dark, twisted pop - sometimes soaked in feedback, sometimes pounded out with drum-machine backing - of Automatic contains their most successful single up to that point, "Head On" (later covered by the Pixies). On green vinyl. Click here or on the cover image for more info or to purchase a copy.

Ween color vinyl reissue

"Chocolate And Cheese" on cocoa and cheddar vinyl

Ween's fourth album, originally released in 1994, is perhaps their finest moment, a brilliant mix of twisted humor and pure pop genius. Ween draw influence from smooth 70s soul, psych, soft rock, spaghetti westerns, country, funk, indie-rock and more to the point where each song is a spot-on take on a different genre with their silliness being the uniting element. An outsider-pop classic reissued on individual cocoa brown & yellow vinyl. Click here or on the cover image for more info or to purchase a copy.

Ween color vinyl reissue

"12 Golden Country Greats" on marbled saddle brown vinyl

1996 release 12 Golden Country Greats is the Pennsylvania duo’s 5th full-length but the first to stick to just one style which was, surprisingly enough, country music. That said, the title of the album is only half-correct as there’s actually only 10 songs here, why? You’ll have to ask Dean and Gene that one. Featuring some of Nashville’s greatest session musicians (including "Pig" Robbins, Charlie McCoy, and the Jordanaires), this is one of Ween’s finest records to date, with that classic Ween sense of humor filtered through a distinct countrypolitan sound. A classic reissued on marbled saddle Brown vinyl! Click here or on the cover image for more info or to purchase a copy.

This sprawling, psychedelic, surreal album is a creative peak for the band with a richly detailed widescreen production courtesy of producer Gavin Mackillop. The 14 track record features many classic songs and it defies commercial conceits by opening with two long songs in "Aura" & "Ripple", continues through songs such as "Mistress" and "Kings", and the journey ends with the epic "Chaos" and the atmospheric instrumental "Film". "Priest = Aura" is a longtime fan favorite and Steve Kilbey's pick as the best album by The Church. First time available doemstically on vinyl. In a wide spine jacket. "Darklands" on blue vinyl

The second album from the brothers Reid, originally released in 1987. Darklands is more accessible and hooky than Psychocandy, leaving most of the feedback and some of the noise behind to focus on the songs and to make a clear break from the legendary debut album. With tracks such as “April Skies”, “Darklands”, “Happy When It Rains” and “Nine Million Rainy Days” the Reid’s proved they had plenty of great songs in them and wouldn’t be boxed in by the past. An all out classic from the 1980s reissued on blue vinyl. Click here or on the cover image for more info or to purchase a copy.

The Cranberries double LP reissue

"Bury The Hatchet"

"Bury The Hatchet" was the fourth studio album by The Cranberries and was originally released in 1999. After the hiatus following "To The Faithful Departed" the band bounced back with the very consistent "Bury The Hachet" featuring the sweeping melodies and soaring vocals they had become known for. The Electric Prunes live album

"Stockholm 67" limited edition yellow vinyl

In the winter of 1967, a psychedelic-garage-punk band from Woodland Hills, California, arrived in Europe for what would be their first and last tour of the continent. On the strength of their hit single "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night," the band was welcomed with open arms by European rock fans as well as British rock royalty - they smoked out with Hendrix, partied with Brian Jones and Keith Moon, and hung out in the studio with the Beatles - but were also subjected to harassment and ridicule over the fact that their homeland was at war in Vietnam. On the last stop of the tour someone pushed the record button and this artifact is the result. Stockholm '67 finds the Electric Prunes at the height of their powers. Over-amplified and fuzzed to the max, the 'Prunes here are explosive, noisy and wild. This recording proves that the Electric Prunes deserve to be ranked alongside the very best bands of their era. Butthole Surfers double album reissue

"Electriclarryland" on 180 gram vinyl

Originally released in 1996, “Electriclarryland” features the Surfers only top 40 hit with the song “Pepper”. Although the sound on this album continues the more streamlined approach they started with “Independent Worm Saloon”, this record is by no means mainstream, even with the hit. With pile driving rockers, pop-punk raves, acid freakouts and their demented sense of humor and bizzare perspective intact - the Surfers take no prisoners! 3 sides of music with the 4th side featuring etchings by Gibby Haynes. Click here or on the cover image for more info or to purchase a copy.

Funkadelic limited edition release

"America Eats Its Young" on opaque turquoise and translucent purple vinyl

(2-LP set) The 4th album from George Clinton’s funk/psych/rock outfit, originally released in 1972, is a double LP of epic proportions. Deep and heavy grooves propelled by the always amazing guitar, bass and keyboard work of Eddie Hazel, William "Bootsy" Collins, and Bernie Worrell, respectively. Equally sleazy, political, heartfelt, and just plain bizarre, America Eats Its Young was, and remains, one of the few double albums of the 1970s that warranted every single minute of wax. Public Image Ltd. classic reissued on LP

"Second Edition" on clear vinyl

The second album from John Lydon's post-Sex Pistols group is widely considered to be their magnum opus. L7 classic reissued on LP

"Bricks Are Heavy" on 180 gram vinyl

"Bricks Are Heavy" was the third album by L7 originally released in 1992. Produced by Butch Vig "Bricks Are Heavy" is somewhat poppier with more focused songwriting than their previous LP's and was the bands breakthrough album fueled by the success of the single "Pretend We're Dead". L7 was often associated with the then raging Grunge movement (even though they were from L.A.) and it's not hard to see why as the album features abrasive, sledgehammer guitar riffs and plenty of heavy rockers with the songs "Wargasm", "Slide", and "Everglade". While the group emphasized their feminist and Riot Grrrl side with "This Ain't Pleasure" and "Diet Pill". First domestic release on vinyl for this early 90s alternative classic. Iggy Pop killer double album reissued on LP

"American Caesar" on 180 gram vinyl

"American Caesar" was originally released in 1993, a couple of years after the all star "comeback" album "Brick By Brick", the double album found Iggy returning to the studio for the follow up with his muscular, tight touring band and they made what is arguably his best solo record since "New Values" in the 1970s. The dark, loud and subtly atmospheric record was recorded in New Orleans with Producer Malcolm Burn. "American Caesar" finds Iggy exploring the dark heart of America in songs that range from all out hard rock such as "Wild America" and "Sickness" to calmer numbers like "Jealousy" and "Mixin' The Colors". Iggy also puts his stamp on the rock classic "Louie Louie" and makes it his own with some lyrical updating. He ends the record with the funny and brutal spoken word "Caesar" in which Iggy plays a U.S. version of the ancient leaders of the Roman Empire. This is most definitely an Iggy Pop record and a hidden gem in his catalog. Includes a previously unavailable insert with an image of Iggy on one side and the lyrics on the other. Gene Clark's classic solo LP from 1974 reissued on 180g vinyl

The epitome of 70s L.A. excess

No Other was a unviversal critical and commercial failure at the time of its release in 1974, but the years have been kind to it. Gene Clark, some 7 years removed from his time with The Byrds, wrote the songs in the quiet seclusion of his Mendocino home but recorded in the cocaine excess of '70s Los Angeles, and the result is the perfect amalgam of those two poles of Clark's personality. Sadly, his return to L.A.'s hedonism resulted in the dissolution of his marriage, but the tragedy sounds so damn good. A California singer-songwriter classic back in print on vinyl with reproductions of the original insert and poster. Click here or on the cover image for more info or to purchase a copy.

Robert Pete Williams' Louisiana Blues reissued on CD and LP

Originally released on John Fahey's Takoma label

Over 50 years since his discovery by ethnomusicologists Dr. Harry Oster and Richard Allen in the prison farm of Angola, Louisiana, what is it that makes the blues as sung and picked by Robert Pete Williams such a singular listening experience, unequaled elsewhere in that musical form? As Peter Guralnick, in his Feel Like Going Home book writes: It's difficult to approve the banalities of most blues singers after listening to Robert Pete Williams. More than anyone else he shatters the conventions of the form and refuses to rely upon any of the cliches, either of music or of lyric, which bluesman after bluesman will invoke. Instead he sings blues which reflect a unique and personal vision; he makes each song unmistakably his own.

Just in time for the holidays, Runt has six great new vinyl reissues. Two, by Bridget St. John, were originally released on John Peel's Dandelion Records. She's one of the great underheralded singer/songwriters of the late 60s, early 70s, Brit-folk movement. And, there's no better place to start than her 2nd, and best, LP "Songs For The Gentle Man", though "Thank You For..." is no slouch either. Two classics lovingly brought back to life by the 4 Men With Beards label. The other 4 LPs come from the vaults of the legendary Smithsonian Folkways label and include the incredible calypso-jazz of Rupert Clemendore & John Buddy Williams, the proto-hip-hop of Street And Gangland Rhythms, the spoken word/funk of Sarah Webster Fabio, and the Eastern-tinged out-jazz of East New York Ensemble de Music.
